Chapter twenty-four
Shifterâs Oddities by Theo Rosenpark
Opening the bookâs cover, I focused on a hand-written passage:
Beware, for I have seen the future and knows its path. Blood, iron, and brute cannot stand in her grace and will fall in his darkness. Oaths of the heart are stronger than any, do not ignore and leave them buried in memory. Follow the Great Star and be blessed by her. You are needed and cannot turn away, or all will fail. Hearts are true, by the light of the Sun and the Moon; darkness is within the home and will fall without blessed light. Be true, confront your past, your sorrow, your grace, your strength and carry on. Pray to the Goddess of the Moon and her lover the Sun for strength and wisdom, worship their children in the sky, as they bless you with their light. She will whisper offerings in your ear. Do not fear but know your place and you will follow in her grace.
âHey, Sofie, guys, what do you make of this?â I asked as I read the passage again out loud. Sofie and I examined the book.
âWhere did you get this?â She asked as she ran her fingers over the pages.
Thinking back to how foolish I had been, I said, âJace gave me the book back in Montana, right before I left. Iâm not sure where he got it. I should have looked at it though, I know I sound stupid, but I didnât know he owned a book.â
Babs spoke up from wiping down the bar. âItâs destiny.â Pointing at the book, her smile grew. âIt was meant to land in your hands.â
I couldnât agree more, remembering the naming ceremony.
Untouched coffee cooled in my left hand. I was so engrossed in the book that everything escaped my mind. I examined the book page by page and whispered to myself, âThis is so fascinating. But I just donât get it. Why would he insist I read this? Nothing in it has changed my mind about going to him for the mating ceremony.â Blowing out a deep breath, I looked at my baby girl, knowing I made the correct choice. I pulled her out of the bouncy seat, sat her next to the book, scooting it a little, and accidentally bumped it to the floor. Son of a Troll.
The book landed open, face up. I brought it to the table. The word Mate stood on top of the page, daring me to look closer. Itsyâs magic filled the air. I could sit all day, watching how much she changed in just the blink of an eye.
